Background
Lorn’s history is one that is as troubled as America’s history with any minority. Lorn was born Masao Imai 正雄 今井 to two Japanese immigrants. He was born in 1924 when the Johnson-Reed act was ratified into law that prevented immigration from Asia and otherwise severely limited immigration from Eastern and Southern Europe. Riding off of the coattails of the so-called “yellow peril” and WWI, it was a scary time to be a minority in America.
His father worked doing labor in California farms while his mother sold remedies to the other local Japanese to get by. It was hard, honest work that created a meager living, but they got by and there were strong pockets of community that supported each other. Lorn went to a Japanese language school. While tensions were high outside of the community, life within the community was alright until anti-Japanese sentiment grew during WWII and especially after Pearl Harbor.
Lorn’s family was rounded up and incarcerated in one of the Japanese concentration camps in 1943, when he was sixteen. While they “did their best” to keep families together, Lorn eventually lost contact with his family while at one of the waiting centers and they were separated and went to separate facilities. Life was lonely and hard, and when the Japanese Americans were released, he took the time to track down his family and discover that his parents had died due to age and the poor treatment and resources in the camps.
It took a while for Lorn to try and rebuild his life, but life always finds a way to persist. He moved to Los Angeles and found a Japanese community to settle into as he started attending night classes at the University of California Los Angeles to work toward an art history degree so that he could pursue a future of book repair and conservation.
His ties remained strong with his community where he continued to work and put together Kampo and other traditional medicine for families in need and also practiced the divination forms of Ekikyo and Tengenjutsu - all things that he was rather talented in (or so all the elders in the community said.)
Lorn’s junior year of college was an exciting one: he was almost done with his program, he’d found a community of people that had similar passions as him, and he was managing to gain enough skill to be able to pursue rebinding books and making journals to sell to supplement his income. Life has a funny way of not working out the way we might expect, though.
It was a Saturday and Lorn had just finished re-binding a book for a friend of his and he was walking home after doing some shopping and dropping the book off with his friend. He was out much later than he had expected, walking home after night had fallen. He cut through an alleyway and the next thing he knew he had run into an altercation that he simply couldn’t quite comprehend and he found himself drained of his blood in a momentary lapse on what would become his Sire’s part.
Oliver Medvedík was a professor at UCLA for classic literature and thus was aware of Lorn’s goals when it came to book restoration and conservation - useful skills for repairing aging grimoires that have seen too many years already. Lorn’s talent with traditional divination and Kampo made him that much more lucrative: he dabbled in enough magic to be a good candidate to join the ranks of warlocks. The Embrace was inevitable and Oliver already had permission from the local Regent, he had simply wished to wait for Lorn to finish his degree before it happened.
With the sudden shift in life direction, they did not stay in California for very long. Once Lorn had committed to the Tremere Code and went through the Transubstantiation of Seven, he and his sire moved on to South Dakota for a time. It was here that Oliver taught Lorn the Traditions, how to feed and generally be a vampire, and began to pass down the art of Blood Sorcery. Lorn also worked to repair Oliver’s personal collection of tomes - nothing so important as grimoires, but it provided an informal training to continue his studies.
In 1990 they moved to Cleveland to meld into a larger community and after the fall of Vienna in 1996, Lorn’s felt a bit adrift with the loss of his Bond to his sire. They still work closely together, though Lorn is finally in a place where he can stretch his wings and really begin to go out on his own without needing Oliver’s approval.
