The Other Side
Zimri arrives first on the other side of the portal, in a tomb. He lands smoothly and finds Taraaq with the envoys. Everyone is fine right now. Taraaq admits they have to move. He asks what Zimri’s plans are, and Zimri says he needs to wait for everyone else, and apologizes for the one dead envoy. Taraaq says that he saved as many as he could but that Zimri did an excellent job, and he and the others will not forget this kindness.
Taraaq explains he needs to get everyone home and return to the palace and confides that he’s worried about what he will do when he’s king, how he’ll do.
Damaris arrives next. There’s nobody here where the portal is dumping us out, but there is noise outside of the immediate area. It’s a large enough area we can collect our thoughts in peace.
Silver comes through next. She had some flashbacks on the way through the portal and winds up in a tomb. She looks really hurt and like she’s about to throw up. Zimri pulls her out of the portal arrival area and then does some first aid on her. It helps her get over the poison from the dragon thing that had attacked us. Silver hugs him tightly and laughs while crying, saying she’s going to punch Allegro (Zimri’s dad). She takes Zimri’s face in her hands and comments that she never noticed he looked so much like Maria, then kisses him on the forehead and hugs him tightly again. Zimri looks to Damaris for help.
Nymnar steps through the portal and arrives on the other side adjusting the cuff of his sleeve. He makes note of what’s going on and decides not to interact with Zimri and Silver. Zimri manages to pull apart from Silver and asks what’s going on and Nymnar and Silver comment that things have gone sideways, and that Achille is coming right after Nymnar. Pyrisou was eaten by an orm, and nobody seems bothered by Pyrisou’s fate.
Achille falls from darkness toward light, and a calm female voice comments that she will not be able to reach Achille for a while. Achille wonders if Nymnar messed up the portal (no, the voice reassures). He asks who is speaking and she asks who he thinks, and Achille comments that his life has been long and his experiences has taken him many places: he has no clue. She comments that he’s had a long life and has chosen a path of redemption - does he think it’ll stick? He thinks it has to. She tells him to keep home, and comments that she will not be able to reach him where they are going. Achille realizes that she’s too nice to be Lolth, and then asks if it’s Nusemnee - she confirms. She comments that Lolth considers Achille a lost cause, but she personally doesn’t believe in lost causes. She reassures Achille that she believes he’s on the right path. She warns that the place we are - Sigil - is not a safe place. Achille lands heavily on the ground outside the portal, and the portal collapses.
Silver asks Achille if he’s okay, and he says he doesn’t know - he thinks so? Damaris asks what happened and Achille says that he spoke to god. Damaris asks which one, and Taraaq and Silver comment that we shouldn’t speak of the gods here. Achille reassures that it’s one of the good ones. Taraaq explains that speaking of the gods isn’t illegal per se, there’s an entire faction dedicated to becoming a god, but the actual deities are not allowed here.
Plans
There’s some conversation back and forth and we come up with what we need to do. The envoys are sent to the embassy and we decide that’s not a bad idea, but we should find somewhere to rest and eat first.
We exit the tomb and see the hustle and bustle of the city. Far in the distance the city curls up: there is no sky, but just more city above. Silver realizes we are in a ring shaped city. As we walk through the streets she realizes she once lived in Sigil. Taraaq decides that the first bar we find we are going to go in - to which Silver shoots down the first option.
The next tavern is The Gathering Dust, which is owned by the faction the Dust Men which believe all things are dead and the goal is to achieve true death. It’s a gothic outfit with everyone looking like they are arriving from or going to a funeral, or otherwise look like grave diggers.
We discuss next plans and there’s an agreement to go to the embassy for the fire plane. Nymnar speaks up and suggests that they all go to the Netherworld embassy to try to arrange transportation. Silver comments that this isn’t a good place to stay and Nymnar stares at her asking what she means, and Zimri ultimately comments that we should find an inn to stay in, while rubbing his nose (and sneezing). He doesn’t want to stay here because his nose is sensitive.
On Reincarnation
Silver is somewhat (not really) upset that Zimri’s dad never really talked about her and she explains that they were members of the same adventuring party in the past. She explains that Lily was named after her, and it’s nice that she was able to be remembered. She comments that she’s glad she could meet her godson. Zimri tries to say he’s still older than her and Achille says that this isn’t how reincarnation works, and then asks if Zimri knows how reincarnation works (no).
Zimri explains he understands that when you die you come back, an he asks if Silver is even the same person since she never remembers her past lives. Achille cuts in and says yes, she’s the same, and something about them is hardwired because she’s always the same. Achille and Silver talk a while about this, about reincarnation and what it’s like to live with it.
Somewhere along the way, Nymnar gets up and moves to the bar to drink and talk to literally anyone else.
Taraaq is here for the entire conversation and he comments that he’s learning so much about everyone.
Everyone decides it’s time to rest. Silver suggests the embassy for the fire plane to at least find a recommendation for a place to stay and figure out where to go for things.
The Embassy
On the way to the embassy, Silver asks Achille if he knows how many times she’s died. He says no - they’ve generally met, but they don’t necessarily get to know each other and not every life knows each other. She comments that they were friends for a while and Achille confirms off and on, yes, but he doesn’t know how many lifetimes.
We away from the Hive district, and there’s a tavern with a man that’s burning, a portal to the fire plane within him - it’s the Smoldering Corpse bar. Zimri asks if we should help, and Taraaq comments that perhaps a decanter of endless water… Nymnar speaks up and says we should perhaps keep our noses out of where they don’t belong. Silver comments that she understands the want to help everyone, but we can’t help everyone. Achille explains that most people do deserve help, but there are situations where help should not be granted. Zimri says we need to just move on.
We enter Cleric’s Ward not long after. there’s a humanoid creature holding a magical sword. It takes it in its hands, breaks a piece of it off, and eats it - it’s glad to be eating power. It’s the Incanterium Faction: they believe that by absorbing magic, they can rewrite reality. We see another humanoid with white hair, horns, yellow-tan skin, floating above. It doesn’t approach us: it looks at us, and is puzzled, but they don’t speak. Symbols show up above its head: a dabbus. They don’t speak, they create an image puzzle above their head. They serve the Lady of Pain. Silver gets the gist: “tourists?” Silver says that we’re just passing through, she promises to get us out of their hair soon. As we pass, we notice there’s a whole group of them mending a building that is damaged from an explosion or maybe combat.
We make it to the embassy. It’s not particularly impressive. We enter, following Taraaq. We are shuffled into a waiting area since Taraaq is here. There’s already someone here, and they say hello to us. Silver says hello. The guy is wearing bones on his armor. He also has a sword, but it’s rusted. He wants to get into the business of selling weapons. Damaris asks what she’d do with a rusted sword, and the gentleman explains that the weapons he sells are good.
He reveals he’s a Doomguard. Zimri offers to heal him and he says no. Zimri says that he’s the team doctor and the gentleman says that Zimri’s trying to stop a tsunami with a bucket, and Zimri sits down in the corner. Damaris comments that people here don’t believe in health care, and he says he just acknowledges the truth of the multiverse. Damaris and Silver try to interact more and the gentleman rebuffs them, ultimately offering to show his wares to us if we are in the market for a new weapon.
Damaris tries to come to an understanding of why this gentleman would let his creation decay and fall apart, and he thinks that Damaris is arguing with him to try to convince him on the benefits of taking care of equipment. The two of them go back and forth like this until we finally are seen.
