After the Wood Giants

Travel begins again in earnest. As we are traveling, Mary is visited by a gentleman who is ill. She performs and exam and figures out that the gentleman - Bor - has scarlet fever (along with a few of his friends), and she goes to let Indracht Krell know about this. He informs her that she unfortunately must tell Dr. SĂżtz about this as she is the top medical officer. The doc does agree to separate the infected for quarantine and keep tabs on everyone to watch for spread.

During this conversation, a huge mosquito flies in and sticks Indract. It sits for a moment, then blinks green. Mary asks what this is and Indract explains that it tests the blood of people to check if they are ill: if it turns green then they are not sick. Mary politely refuses and then the doctor comes in and basically says that she will assume Mary is sick if she refuses. Mary politely excuses herself after explaining she knows how to treat this thing.

Bosch and Faylen catch one of them and it bites Bosch. It flashes green and then they let it go outside and it settles down on a leaf, and then explodes. Faylen doesn’t know much about the magic, but is aware that the magic is pretty unstable if it only works in such a short radius.

Tabby is far less impressed by this and swats at the mosquito and doesn’t let it bite him.

Oryeon Onyons sends out a memo to let everyone know they are required to be bitten by the mosquito.

Mary works on treating the gentleman with the scarlet fever and Bosch comes in with some plants from the mosquito that exploded. He offers it to Dr. Sÿtz and she does not want the plants. He shrugs and hands them over to Mary and comments that listening doesn’t always work, and Dr. Sÿtz says that things work so much better if everyone listens to her. Bosch opts to leave so he doesn’t have to listen to her at all.

Mary takes all of the precautions required to take care while treating the sick and she does a great job: she prepares medicine, she treats everyone, and people get better despite Dr. SĂżtz.

Oryeon’s vigilance towards Kaymanth starts to wane. Bosch does go through his things and finds that he has a closet full of read-made cult clothing. He has a book full of symbols for all of the cults, and then robes for each of them. He’s able to easily swap the symbols of each of the robes as well.

Widald continues staring off at Tabby in his spare time. He’s just become something of a fixture.

Faylen, for his part, continues studying the manuals for the ship and how to work it. At this point in the trip, he’d be able to muddle through the ritual if something where to happen to Indracht. He also is very aware that Oryeon would be absolutely useless if something happened.

Breakwater Company Sets Off

After a couple more days, Indracht mentions that the Breakwater Company has started their own expedition, so hopefully we have enough of a head start. He knows that they are likely going to try to do something funny: he hopes that we are enough to deal with whatever comes our way. There is no doubt that Izoraxx’s crew is powerful, but their methods are less than optimal.

He hopes that things will go well but likely someone’s been dispatched to mess with us, and right as he says that, the construct shudders to a halt. Indracht is upset because it seems he’s cursed us.

We all head outside and see that there’s a huge hole that’s seemed to have opened in front of us, and it’s very slowly growing. Bosch starts to look for things to push into the hole to fill it, while Mary hears chewing, of all things. Destroyer helpfully explains that he’s promised not to hurt another living creature.

Looking down, there are creatures that seem to be following the orders of a dwarf with a whistle down below. They don’t have eyes. They seem to be animals, not intelligent. Bosch whistles very, very loudly and it clearly confuses the animals, causing them to stop and back up toward their handler.

Mary attempts speaking to the creatures and asks them to eat elsewhere. The creatures explain that they are digging because that’s what the handler says to do, and Mary explains that this is in the way of us. The animals explains that’s not their problem, likely that’s probably the point.

The dwarf explains he has more animals - morthaks - that he can bring out. He is authorized by the Breakwater Company to suggest we go home, and Tabby responds that the dwarf should turn around with his morthaks and go home instead. We politely decline, and so combat ensues.

We figure out that the dwarves do not have a vehicle like the construct, but they do have tunnels that already exist, and that’s what they are using.

We finish up the combat by knocking out all of the morthaks and their handler, and Akker is incredibly interested in the bomb that Bosch has. He thinks it’s very cool, and Bosch explains it’s a perk of working for Axamonar. Akker acknowledges that he might get more fun stuff from Axamonar but he works for Izoraxx as it is and he still finds the team more interesting.

We opt to move the city and then blow the tunnel to collapse it. We take the morthaks and their handler prisoner to ask then questions later.

There’s some back and forth with Akker as the charges are set for the tunnel.
